Research has extensively explored why firms use their consumer information to price discriminate between repeat and new customers. This paper incorporates overlapping ownership (OO) and explores a more nuanced explanation for the practice. We isolate the different and interactive effects of OO in different periods on equilibrium outcomes. In our explanation, firms use OO to increase repeat purchase and customer retention and therefore may charge higher prices for both repeat and new customers, when they choose behavior-based pricing (BBP) rather than uniform pricing (UP). As a result, if the degree of OO is not too small, BBP benefits firms but hurts consumers.

李长英,美国科罗拉多大学(University of Colorado at Boulder)经济学博士,山东大学经济学院教授、博士生导师,主持(过)国家社会科学基金重大项目、重点项目,教育部人文社会科学重点研究基地重大项目等课题,在Journal of International Economics等国内外学术期刊上发表论文70余篇。主要研究领域为产业组织理论、国际贸易、微观经济理论与应用。
